Many tradespeople are familiar with the ASTM safety regulations and OSHA guidelines. But an ASTM F2413-18 safety footwear rating specifically focuses on the minimum performance requirements that must be met in order to ensure work boots and shoes have all the necessary features to protect wearers from workplace hazards and injuries.

Footwear that meets ASTM F2413-18 standards is rigorously tested by an independent third-party laboratory and must pass in order to receive a Certification of Conformance from the laboratory with the test results.

For work boots that meet the above standards, we really like the BRUNT Workwear collection of boots.  If you are familiar with Brunt boots, then see the below table, otherwise, keep reading to learn about the ASTM F2413-18 safety standards for work boots.

Basic Requirements of ASTM F2413-18 Safety Standards

Let’s look at what’s considered in the ASTM F2413-18 safety standards and why you need work boots that meet these requirements.

  1. Impact and compression resistance. ASTM F2413-18 certified footwear must meet specific impact and compression resistant requirements. In order to pass inspection and receive certification, the shoes or boots must be designed to withstand an impact force of at least 75 pounds and loads of at least 2,500 pounds without breaking or cracking.

A good example of a work boot that meets these demands is Brunt Workwear’s Marin boot. The Marin Composite Toe Boot (also known as the Marin Comp Toe) features a bonus for any tradesperson. Top-quality, durable materials help the Marin provide the strong, trustworthy protection your feet and toes need. The Marin Comp Toe can withstand sudden or intense shock and the lightweight nano toe’s composite materials meet the F2413-18 safety and impact resistance standards.

If you work with heavy equipment or tools, then you need a work boot that protects your feet. Basic impact hazards that the Marin boot can easily stand up to include falling or rolling objects, crushing force, and much more.

  1. Built-in protection. According to the occupational safety and health administration (OSHA), built-in protections are key, but add-on devices that also protect the feet are also allowed. This means you can wear regular work boots, and attach any device to the boot that might help protect you from injuries, as long as the device has documentation proving it meets e performance standards.

But, ASTM F2413-18 requirements are stricter and don’t allow for added devices. Instead, the standards require all protections to be built-in into the work boot design. So, if your workplace requires a boot that meets the ASTM F2413-18 standard, you can’t use a boot that requires add-on devices to meet OSHA requirements.

This added layer of safety requirements can provide additional protections in boot design—and ultimately keep workers safer. For example, Brunt Workwear’s Marin Comp Toe boot has a built-in nano composite toe. The design of the boot’s toe cap includes a metatarsal guard that’s constructed during the boot’s manufacturing process. This key safety feature is an integral part of the Marin boot, and can’t be removed.

When considering safety and ASTM F2413-18 standards, The Marin boot’s composite toe design ensures you’ve got all the protections, while also keeping your feet comfortable. It’s important to note that many of the OSHA add-on devices can also mean you’re adding weight to your legs and feet. After a long day of work, dragging around even a few ounces can lead to strain or injury. But the Brunt Marin Comp Toe boot is built to be lightweight, even while providing important protections.

  1. Electric hazard resistance (EH). Electrical hazard resistance standards and certifications (EH) require that protective footwear be regularly evaluated for performance and safety. The Marin Comp Toe has been tested for this and certified as electric hazard resistant.

This means this boot does not conduct electricity. The entire surface of the Marin Comp Toe is made from non-conductive materials, so no electricity will pass through it.

If you’re an electrician or work in places where you are exposed to electrical charges, this boot is needed as secondary protection.

Additional Features of the Marin Comp Toe Work Boot

  1. Waterproof. In addition to meeting the ASTM F2413-18 requirements, the Marin Comp Toe is a highly waterproof work boot. If you work in wet areas or around water, then you need boots that can keep your feet dry and free from potential electrical hazards.

Soaked boots will become heavy and restrict your movements, too. The Marin boots will keep your feet warm, regulate your temperature, and prevent blisters. (Note: Blisters are more likely to occur if you walk around with wet feet.)

  1. Slip resistant. Slip-resistant boots are a necessity in most work areas to prevent accidents and injuries. If you work with liquid or work in areas liquids are likely to spill, then you’ll need a boot with this feature.

The Marin Comp Toe is built with a rubber sole and a specially designed tread pattern to provide enhanced traction on wet surfaces. This ensures your soles land firmly on the ground and don’t slip. This boot is perfect for hiking during winter or rainy weather, as well as working in wet environments.

  1. Breathable. For working during the summer months and long days on your feet, you need boots that are breathable. Hiking or working with sweaty feet quickly lead to fatigue, blisters, and additional issues. Plus, it’s just plain uncomfortable; when your feet get hot while working and you start sweating, it can negatively impact how you do your job.

The Marin Comp Toe is built with mesh lining to make sure your feet always stay dry. Air flows into the boots to keep heat away and to provide additional comfortability. Even if you spend all day in Marin Comp Toe boots, your feet will stay comfortable, dry, and protected.

In addition to providing ASTM F2413-18 certified safety features, the Brunt Workwear Marin Composite Toe work boot is a great option for any worker. To learn more about this work boot, be sure to read our ultimate guide on Marin work boots.
