5 Best Ladders for Cutting Hedges & Pruning Trees – In-Depth Review
As technical contractors, we have limited knowledge of gardening. So we took help from our gardener friends to determine which ladder to include in our list of recommendations. Also, with their help, we could test these ladders on multiple gardens and hedges.
- 16 Different Shapes
- Durable
- Lightweight

When it comes to high-quality ladders, Little Giant is a known brand. They produce safe and durable ladders and didn’t disappoint us while we were testing them.
The Little Giant 14010-001 is a portable ladder with many features that can help you cut hedges and other purposes.
It is an adjustable ladder that helped us a lot while working with it, and its maximum height is 156 inches (13 feet). We could use this ladder on small and medium hedges. We could transform it into different shapes (A-frame, staircase, extensions, 90-degree ladders) to match it with the project you are working on.
According to the manufacturer, this ladder weighs 25 pounds, but we got 28 pounds while measuring the weight. So, we faced a little difficulty carrying it around. But, for some people, carrying 28 pounds of weight is not too difficult.
This ladder has a triple-locking hinge that ensures it is secure before climbing it (making it highly stable). However, the ladder can uphold 250 lbs in total.
One of the things we did not like was the latch locks of the ladder because they were plastic made and didn’t look durable to us. Although it is a stable ladder, the plastic locks make it less durable.

While we were testing Louisville FXS1510 for cutting hedges, the tool tray at the top of the ladder was a great help. You don’t have to drop down to pick another tool; you can pick it from the tool tray. What I like most about this tool tray is that it has a magnet inside. You can still place small tools on the plastic tray if all your slots are filled.
It is a 10-foot ladder — if you have very high hedges, this one isn’t the best choice, but it is perfect for small and medium heights.
It’s made of non-conductive fiberglass that provides safety and does not catch rust.
The ladder is versatile because we could convert it from step to shelf ladder as it’s a 2-in-1 combination ladder. The v-shaped pro top of the ladder can be stacked against the walls or poles to make work easier. The step ladder is designed to get you closer to the hedges.
The ladder is a 39-pounds weighted ladder that can lift 300 pounds of weight. Its design is elegant, strong, and sturdy. The downside of the ladder was that we needed much strength to handle.
- 330 lbs Weight Capacity
- Adjustable
- Portable

Another ladder that has much weight-lifting capacity, like the previous one, is this Finether’s.
As you may have guessed from the name, it’s 15 feet tall, but its weight was the most surprising thing for us when we tested it. The weight is only 12.2kg, less than the weight of our previously discussed ladders. The weight and height made it easier for us to carry it and move around.
What makes this ladder special is that it’s very portable. When it’s fully closed, it’s only 4 feet tall. This is helpful if you need more space to store this tool.
The ladder is certified by European safety standards because its locking hinges ensure the user’s safety while using it.
On top of that, this ladder is also adjustable — you can transform it into different shapes and use it as a single-ladder, double-side ladder, stair ladder, work platform, trestle, etc. These features make this tool very versatile.
The maximum weight capacity of this ladder is 330 lbs, but it does not hold that much because it comes with low-quality aluminum mats that can easily bend.

Another Louisville ladder we tested was this unique 10-foot tall ladder. Although it seems extremely small and incapable of cutting hedges, that’s untrue.
This ladder is an ideal choice for cutting hedges as it is a heavy-duty working ladder with quite a weight (44 pounds) that makes it stable and sturdy.
It can carry 300 lbs of weight. But, if you take a heavy-weight thing on the ladder, this is not a suitable choice.
The ladder is adjustable and can have a maximum standing height of 23 inches, and now you can determine the maximum reach height according to your height. We could reach 100 inches with this ladder.
It is a tripod-style ladder made of superior quality and non-conductive fiberglass material. Additionally, the ladder has reinforcements and double rivet construction, making it more durable. Our testing was easier because of its easy working and comfortable steps. But, during our testing, the aluminum steps got bent, so the steps needed to be more durable.
Like the previous Louisville ladder, this one also has a tool tray. Also, it has a center pull spreader that makes handling the ladder much easier. It is also safe, stable, and certified by ANSI, OSHA, and CSA.
- 1AA Ladder
- Wheels
- Heavy-Duty
More detailed review ↴
Another small giant ladder became a part of our review because it is claimed to be as ideal for heavy-duty work as this 1AA-type ladder. The ladder’s specialty is its great weight-holding capacity (more than 350 pounds).
As we mentioned earlier, Little Giant Ladder is a known brand for high-quality ladders. What makes this unit special is that you can place it in any position you want, and it will be stable, all thanks to the patent-pending select step that gives the tool stability.
The ladder weighs approximately 40 pounds, which makes it heavier, but it comes with wheels at the bottom that help you move it around easier. Also, it has a select step that allows easy-to-use locks and grip handles that help in easy moving.
It is a fiberglass-made ladder and comes with the feature of multiple sizes of step ladders. We could adjust this ladder for different heights and purposes.
Another issue we faced was that the air deck was not included in the ladder purchase: you must buy it separately.
Best Ladder for Cutting Hedges & Pruning Trees – Buyers Guide
Although we have discussed the best ladder available in the market for pruning trees, if, in any case, you are not able to get the required ladder, you can choose the alternatives, they need to have a few factors considered.
The factors are based on our testing experience: you must need things while choosing the ladders.

The ladder-type depends on your garden. Depending on how high the hedges are, and how much space you have in your garden you can choose one ladder or the other.
If you have a very small garden, then buying a high and big ladder isn’t the best idea. Or, if you have a big garden then buying a small ladder will just make the process harder. That’s why it all depends on your garden.

Most of the time, hedges have platforms made around them, making access to them even harder. Additionally, they already have different heights and shapes, so you need a ladder that can adjust its legs and make it easy to access the hedges.
For this purpose, we have discussed 3,4 ladders that are adjustable according to the area or space you are working on. The adjustable ladders can transform their shapes into stair extensions, A-frame ladders, and more.

The ladder heights are the must-consider factor because too little height will be useless for cutting hedges, and too large heightened ladders will be unstable in uneven areas.
Consider the height of your hedge, and choose according to your needs. Choosing a 20-foot large ladder with only a 10-foot long hedge will not be wise.
When buying a ladder for hedges, it is important to buy a ladder that is one or two inches higher than your tallest hedge. You can buy a higher ladder only if it’s an adjustable one, and you can adjust it to match the height of the hedges. Also, check the maximum standing height of the ladder, and determine the maximum reach according to your height.

Not everyone has a flat garden; most of the surface around the hedges isn’t flat. The surface will be very soft unless you have something on the ground.
Soft surfaces are unstable, and a simple move can easily shake the ladder. We recommend choosing a ladder with rails or long stabilizers to support uneven surfaces.
Step Size
We recommend choosing a ladder with wider steps. A hedge takes up much space, sometimes covering the whole ladder. You should have some space to move your feet while working.
The steps should be wide at the center so you can move your feet inside the ladder and not outside. Remember, only move your feet if uncomfortable and can’t work.
Body Support
Some hedges are very close, and some are far away. If you feel that the hedge is close to you, you will likely attempt to reach the hedge from your position without going down and moving the ladder.
We recommend a ladder with body support to protect you from slipping. If your ladder doesn’t have body support, it’s recommended to move it into a position where you can reach the hedge without needing to lean your body.
Tools Tray
Although this isn’t necessary, it’s still good to have it if possible. The tool tray is usually at the top of the ladder, above the highest step. These trays come with slots where you can put your tools.
This is helpful if you are working with different tools. Instead of going down and picking the tool you need, you can pick it from the tool tray without going down. That helps you save a lot of time and energy.
Height Adjust-ability
Hedges come in different heights, some are very few inches high, and some are a few feet high. Most basic ladders don’t have enough height to reach hedges or are very high, so you can work comfortably.
The hedge-cutting ladders come with adjustable options. That means you can make the ladder shorter or taller depending on your hedge height.
Accessibility
A hedge-cutting ladder comes with adjustable legs that allow you to adjust the whole shape of the ladder. These fantastic features in the ladder make it easier to access the tree.
Safety
Usually, cheap and basic ladders are made from low-quality materials. These ladders tend to bend a lot or even break. A hedge-cutting ladder usually comes with a high-quality material such as air-grade aluminum or fiberglass.
The material is essential because it gives the ladder a longer life and makes it more stable. And a sturdy ladder means that you will work comfortably.

We have tried our best to give you all the information you need to choose a hedge-cutting ladder. In our best ladders for pruning trees list, we have 5 different ladders that come with different qualities. You can choose one or the other depending on your garden and needs.
