More detailed review ↴

The Werner FTP6212 is made of fiberglass, which is why it’s our favorite orchard ladder, as we can keep this in the lawn without worrying about rust.

This is a heavy ladder because of its 51-pound weight. However, these ladders are mostly this heavy. So, it’s normal for these ladders to have that much weight.

This orchard ladder can hold 300 pounds, while its maximum height is 144 inches.

The 12 feet ladder can hold tools at its top, while the feature of wrapping around tools to keep them secure is what we loved while testing it.

We could use the Werner ladder even in tight places because of the single rear rails, which allowed us to use it where other ladders could not work.

The ladder’s spread handle made our work much easier and more convenient. The ladder has protection against abrasion or rail damage through molded external rail shields.

Another thing our team noticed was the traction tread steps which are double riveted that make sure that the ladder steps are slip-resistance.

What We Liked?
  • Loading capacity is good
  • Non-slippery steps and handles are comfortable
  • Ladder height is good
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Heavy
  • Expensive

Another orchard ladder our team tested was a little giant ladder 15131-001. What makes this ladder special is its adjustability. The select step on both sides is adjustable to transform this ladder into different shapes; you can even use it on stairs or uneven surfaces without any problem.

The ladder is exceptionally lightweight relative to the previous one and, at the same time, has more loading capacity: under 40-pounds ladder handling more than 350 pounds of weight.

The maximum height the ladder can increase is 10 feet which might be low but still impressive (for garden use). This ladder is covered with non-conductive fiberglass resin, which makes sure that the ladder does not catch corrode or rust.

We loved the feature of this ladder that lets you adjust the steps on both sides. The adjustable feature allowed us to use this ladder for uneven surfaces or sloping ground.

The ladder’s select step allowed us to work easily because the locks and handles grip was also comfortable.

What We Liked?
  • Sturdy, stable, and easy to use
  • Ideal for home use and uneven surfaces

The Finethar 4-step ladders are popular these days, and most people prefer them because they are easy to use. These small ladders can handle much weight, making them a fantastic choice.

The ladder weighs 15 kg, which is not much compared to other ladders (So it’s easy to move it in your garden). Also, it handles a weight of 330 pounds, which is a lot if we see other ladders on our list.

You can use this ladder at home to do small chores: painting, nailing, or fixing bulbs, even in kitchens working, garages, or libraries other than orchards.

The ladder, although 33lbs, also comes with grooves for nails and screws; screwdrivers have eight slots, a hammer, a towel, or measuring tape, making it easier to use.

What makes the ladder unique is that it satisfies European safety standards. The ladder has a 0.98” thick steel tube frame and a 1.4” thick step, and non-slippery feet that ensure safety.

The safety of the ladders is guaranteed because the toe supports grippers, horizontal step braces, and solid rear legs that secure the ladders in open locations.

  • Non-slippery and lightweight
  • Loading capacity is amazing
  • Versatile
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Folding and unfolding are hectic
  • The plastic piece that is covering the ends of the ladder legs breaks easily (We had to get it repaired after testing)

The Louisville ladder is also made up of non-conductive fiberglass, so it doesn’t catch rust. But we noticed it quickly catches dust, so you must keep the ladder clean and dry

The ladder is fantastic as it can hold a maximum of 300 lbs, which helps keep it functional even with many tools.

What We Didn’t Like?
  • Heavy but claimed less weight
  • Catches dust quickly

Stability

We all know how orchards are. In most cases, the ground isn’t even, which is a considerable problem for ladders. You can use an unstable ladder on your orchard only if you know you have even ground; if not, finding a stable ladder is recommended.

Stable ladders come with different reinforcements, especially at the legs of the ladder. These reinforcements prevent the legs from bending or moving while you are on the ladder. Also, ladders with adjustable legs are preferred because the foot can be adjusted to make the ladder more stable, and you can work in any condition too.

Height

The orchard ladder should be tall enough to help you reach where the fruits are. If your ladder isn’t tall enough to help you get the nearest fruit, what’s the point of using it?

Keep in mind that you should never overreach a fruit. The ladder should be tall enough so you can quickly grab it. Check how tall the fruits are, then calculate the ladder’s height and see if you can reach the fruits.

Water-Resistant

Most ladders don’t have to be water-resistant, but orchard ladders have to be. The reason is apparent; orchards are mainly used outdoors.

So when it rains, the water usually stays for a couple of days, especially on uneven ground.

You often have to put your ladder into the water and climb and pick the fruits. The ladder can quickly get rust if it stays in the water or moisture for a long time. A water-resistant orchard ladder is essential, especially in a moist area with uneven or soft ground.

Free Movement

You have to move a lot when picking fruits; the ladder should have enough space to allow you to move without the risk of falling from the ladder.

An orchard ladder should first have wide steps or at least non-slip steps. If you have wide steps, then you can move your legs easier.

The ladder should protect you from overreaching simultaneously, allowing you to move freely. Swivel shoes and folding parts are just qualities an orchard ladder should have.

Duty Rating & Weight

No matter the type of ladder you are using, you should always check the duty rating. The duty rating tells you exactly how much weight that ladder can handle.

Before buying an orchard ladder, you have to calculate the maximum weight of the persons who will use the ladder and then add the weight of the tools you will use, then find a ladder that can handle you and the weight of your tools. (loading capacity of the ladder).

If you buy a lightweight ladder, you can easily move it around, and it won’t cause too much damage if the ladder falls. But, if you buy a heavy ladder, the chances of the ladder falling are lower and more stable.  The choice is yours. It should not exceed 50 pounds of weight in any condition. Although it is still heavy, more than this will be extremely heavy.

Adjustable Height

You will have different trees in your orchard. Some of them are taller, and some of them aren’t. You can’t expect to buy a ladder and reach all the fruit with it (I mean, you can, but it is only possible with adjustable ladders).

Instead of choosing any other option, go for the adjustable ladder that allows you to change its height. This will enable you to use the ladder for other projects, not just the orchard.

The maximum height of the ladder should be more than 10 feet.

How to safely use an Orchard Ladder?

You can have the best orchard ladder with all the qualities you need, but if you don’t know how to use an orchard ladder safely, then what’s the point?

As I said before, the ground on orchard is soft. So, the chance of the ladder moving is high. That's why you need to know how to safely use orchard ladders. You can have all the features you want, but if you don't know how to use them then you are going to fall.

Here are some things that you have to do to protect yourself and the ladder from any accident while working in your garden:

Ladder Inspection

Before using an orchard ladder, you have to inspect it first.

You can do that by putting one of your legs on the first step of the ladder and adding weight.

This trick lets you know if the ladder has uneven legs, loose parts, slippery steps, cracks, loose bolts, or is rusted.

Check side rails: that can be twisted. Check the tongue: it must be appropriately attached. You have to do this every time you change the ladder position.

Find a Firm-Ground

Using a ladder in a soft place isn’t an excellent idea. Most likely, the ladder will sink or move a lot. Ladders should be tipped over backward.

Both of these scenarios will make you fall from the ladder. Finding firm ground where the ladder won’t move easily would be best to prevent that.

Check the ladder angle by standing next to the ladder and make sure you spread your arms to reach the ladder without struggle or the ladder is too close: then the angle of your ladder is fine.

Stand on the ladder’s rungs, put some force, and check that it is balanced.

Use the 4-1 Rule

To know how high you can climb a ladder, you can use the 4-1 rule. For every 4 feet, you must climb on your ladder and move the ladder 1 foot away from the support base.

When buying a ladder, calculate the maximum height you need to climb and then use the 4-1 rule to know exactly the distance you must keep from the base of the support. This rule is only for straight or extension ladders.

Control Your Movements

No rule or ladder will save you if you don’t control your movements. While working, always remember that you are away from the ground, and one wrong move and you can fall.

Always check your legs and the ladder before making a move. If you can’t reach fruits in your orchard, then don’t try to overreach. You bring the ladder closer to the tree and then pick the fruits.

Final Words

Buying a ladder is an investment that you make for your orchard. If you buy the right ladder, then you can use the same ladder for many years.

If you buy the wrong ladder, you can fall from it, damage your trees, and waste a lot of money. That’s why we made the best orchard ladders list and the buyer’s guide.

Read the buyer’s guide if you don’t know which ladder to choose.  You should also know how to use an orchard ladder. As always, if you have any questions, email or comment below.
