I have worked with many different paint sprayers, and I found out that many of them can’t handle chalk paint. To spray chalk paint, the paint sprayers should be powerful. Since there are many different paint sprayers around, choosing one can be difficult.

But luckily, we have made a list of the best paint sprayers for chalk paint (you can check the list below). The list has 5 different paint sprayers that come with different features. Most of them are versatile so you can use them for different paints and not only chalk paint.

What is Chalk Paint?

Chalk paint is a paint that is mostly used to paint furniture or other small objects. It gives the surface a chalky-like appearance, and also it gives the furniture an old/classic look. So, if you are into classic/old furniture then chalk paint is the paint you need to use while you are redecorating your house.

Chalk paint is water-based paint, so any paint sprayer that can use water-based paint can also use chalk paint without any problem.

Best Paint Sprayers For Chalk Paint

1.HomeRight C800971

Best Features  HomeRight C800971.A Super Finish Max, Includes 3 Brass Spray Tips, 3 Spray Patterns, Easy to Clean...

  • Easy To Use
  • Three Spray Tips
  • Powerful

If you are looking for a paint sprayer that except for chalk paint, it can also spray different kinds of paint, then make sure to check the HomeRight C800971.

I have used this paint sprayer with chalk paint to spray mostly fences, doors, etc. The paint sprayer is made for homeowners and DIYers so it is very easy to use. If you never used a paint sprayer before then this should be your choice.

It is fully adjustable, which means that you can change the pressure and the material flow, this allows you to use this same paint sprayer for different tasks. You can also choose between horizontal, vertical, and round air caps.

The HomeRight C800971 comes with three different spray tips. The red one (4.0mm), the green one (2.0mm), and the blue tip (1.5mm). You have to use different tips for different paint types. I recommend using the green tip (2.0mm) for chalk paint. It also has different spray patterns that you can use for different-shaped objects.

On the downside, the paint container has a small circle at the top so your hand doesn’t fit in. This can make the cleaning process harder.

What We Liked:

  • Easy To Use – Made for home-owners so it’s very easy to use.
  • Powerful – Enough power to deal with latex and chalk paint.
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the pressure and material flow.
  • Three Tips – Includes three spray tips with different spray patterns.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • It’s hard to clean the paint container.

2. Wagner 0529033

Best Features  Wagner Spraytech 0529033 Home Décor HVLP Paint Sprayer, 6' Hose, Chalk Paint Spray Gun, Milk...

  • Home-Decor Sprayer
  • Adjustable
  • Lightweight

The Wagner 0529033 is a home-decor paint sprayer. That means that you can use this same paint sprayer for almost every home painting project (including furniture).

The sprayer is versatile, except for chalk paint you can also use milk and other decorative painting. It is adjustable, you can change the material flow and the patterns.

It is a stationary sprayer, which means that the paint containers and other things stay on the ground, you only have to carry the weight of the spray gun while working. The spray gun is very lightweight, it weighs 1.08 lbs. I find it very easy to set up, you only have to fill the paint and start spraying (sometimes you have to thin the paint).

Overall a great home decor paint sprayer. But, I recommend this only if you have small home projects. This isn’t recommended for professional use.

What We Liked:

  • Home-Decor – It is made only for home painting projects.
  • Lightweight – The spray gun only weighs 1.08 lbs.
  • Easy To Use – You only have to fill the paint and spray spraying,
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the material flow.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not recommended for professional use.

3. Wagner Spraytech 0518080

Best Features  Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP Paint or Stain Sprayer, Complete Adjustability for...

  • Stationary
  • HVLP
  • Powerful

This is another paint sprayer manufactured by Wanger but this is a more powerful one. This paint sprayer uses an HVLP system, which means it uses less pressure but the volume is higher. This one is a stationary paint sprayer, just like our other Wagner Sprayer listed here.

Due to its HVLP system and the powerful two-stage motor, this sprayer can spray un-thinned paint (including chalk paint). This sprayer is also adjustable, you can adjust the paint flow and the pressure, which makes this spray versatile.

What I like most about this paint sprayer is the design. The spray gun is connected to a 20ft long paint hose which makes this paint sprayer ideal if you are working outdoor. The hose is very durable, you can feel it once you touch it.

On the downside, most of the adjustable control buttons are on top of the stationary body which means you have to go back and forth to stop the sprayer.

What We Liked:

  • HVLP – Uses less pressure to spray more paint.
  • Powerful – Comes with a two-stage motor.
  • Stationary – It features a 20ft long paint hose.
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the material flow and pressure.
  • Spray Patterns – You can change the spray patterns to match them with the object you are working on.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Most of the buttons are on the stationary body and not on the spray gun.

4. Graco Magnum 257025

Best Features  Graco Magnum 257025 Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer, Multicolor

  • 50ft Hose
  • Compact Design
  • Airless

As always, we like to include a more powerful paint sprayer on our list. A very good airless paint sprayer that we use to spray chalk paint is the Graco Magnum 257025.

This paint sprayer is fully adjustable, which means that you can adjust the paint flow, and the pressure, plus it comes with a RAC IV Switch Tip that allows you to reverse the tip if the sprayer gets clogged while working. Note: the tip gets clogged a lot!

It features a 3/8 HP motor and a steel piston that gives the sprayer enough power to deal with un-thinned paint. It also can spray chalk paint without any problem.

The Graco claims that it can spray up to 0.24 gallons per minute, and that’s true. But, if you use full speed then the finish quality won’t be good.

On the downside, the 50ft. is good if you work outside, but whenever I use this sprayer indoors I trip on the hose and I always make a huge mess.

What We Liked:

  • Powerful – It features a 3/8 HP motor.
  • Fast – It can spray up to 0.24 gallons per minute.
  • 50 Ft. Hose – Allows you to move around easier.
  • Compact Design

What We Don’t Like:

  • The Sprayer Clogs Very Often.

5. Paint Sprayer Voluker

Best Features  Paint Sprayer Voluker 600 Watt High Power HVLP Home Electric Spray Gun Three Spray Patterns 3 Nozzle...

  • Budget-Friendly
  • Easy To Clean
  • 600W Motor

If you are looking for a budget-friendly paint sprayer then the Paint Sprayer Voluker will do. You don’t have to break the bank for this one.  Although this is a cheap paint sprayer, it can still deal with chalk paint.

What I like most about this paint sprayer is that it’s very easy to clean. Almost all the parts of this one can be removed and that makes the whole cleaning process easier.  It also comes with three spray patterns and 4 nozzle sizes that allow you to use the same sprayer for different projects.

Although I don’t recommend using this for large projects, the Voluker sprayer still comes with a motor power of 600W that can spray almost every decorative paint.

The finish quality isn’t as good as the others listed here, but it still offers an OK performance.

What We Liked:

  • Budget-Friendly – You don’t have to spend a lot of money
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the paint flow and the speed.
  • Easy to Clean – Almost every part is removable so you can clean them.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Doesn’t Offer The Same Quality As The Others.

Chalk Paint Sprayer – Buyers Guide

Before buying a paint sprayer, you need to know the projects you will be working on. Depending on the project size you will have to choose one paint sprayer or another.  Every sprayer has its pros and cons, you will have to compare them and see which one fits your needs better and which one doesn’t.

When you are looking to buy a paint sprayer for chalk paint then you need to make sure that the sprayer has enough power to deal with that kind of paint.

Versatility

While shopping for a chalk sprayer, you need to check if the sprayer is worth spending money on, you can do that by checking if the sprayer is versatile or not.  By versatile we mean – if the sprayer has enough features for you, and if these features can be adjusted.

The ideal chalk paint sprayer should allow you to change its pressure and material flow. With these adjustments, you can use the same sprayer for different projects and paint. This will help you save a lot of money and time.

You can use the paint sprayer for different projects as well. So having a versatile sprayer is good. Depending on your project, you can use the sprayer to spray different types of paint — such as latex paints, milk paint, etc.

Easy To Clean

Once you buy a chalk paint sprayer then you need to maintain it. Depending on the sprayer, maintenance can be hard or easy. I recommend you go for sprayers that are easy to clean. If you have a sprayer that is easy to clean then once you are done you won’t mind spending 5 more minutes to fully clean the sprayer.

On the other hand, if the sprayer is hard to clean and maintain then you will probably put the sprayer back to its place without cleaning.

Cleaning the paint sprayer after each use means that the sprayer will last longer, that’s why it is always important to clean the sprayer after each use. If you do that, then you can keep the same sprayer for a few years.

Lightweight

If you are going to use the sprayer only for home projects, then this is an important thing to look into.  If you have a lightweight paint sprayer, then moving around is a lot of times easier, plus you will be able to work longer without fatigue. This helps you to complete the projects faster and also better.

Some Tips:

Except for these features, there are a lot of other things that you need to look into. We won’t list them all, because the list is different for each project, but we will list some tips that you should follow to find the paint sprayers for chalk paint

  • Before you buy a chalk paint sprayer, you need to ask yourself – how often will you use the paint sprayer? Some models can be used regularly and some models can handle only a certain amount of paint per year. Either way, you need to know how often will you use the sprayer. If you don’t have a lot of work then a small one will do just fine, and if you have a lot of work around your house then you need to look for a professional one.
  • The price versus the quality – Most of the time the price doesn’t reflect the quality of the paint sprayer. Just because a paint sprayer is expensive doesn’t mean that it’s good, and just because the chalk sprayer is cheap it doesn’t mean that the sprayer isn’t good. That’s why, before buying a sprayer you need to check the reviews.
  • Can they use different paints? –  Right now you need a sprayer that can handle chalk paint, but what about tomorrow? It’s important to have a sprayer that can spray different kinds of paint. If you have a sprayer that can only spray chalk paint then you will have to buy a new one if you need to use another paint. Most sellers list the paints that the sprayer can use in the description of the item.
  • Should you buy a paint sprayer or a paint roller? — When it comes to chalk paint I recommend using a paint sprayer. Paint rollers leave a lot of brush marks on the surface so they are not worth it. On the other hand, paint sprayers are faster and provide a better finish quality.

Why Should You Use a Paint Sprayer for Chalk Paint?

While there are many reasons why should you use a paint sprayer for chalk paint, here are the most important ones:

Power

All the chalk paint sprayers we listed above have enough power to deal with any kind of paint, including chalk paint. This makes these products very versatile and useful.

Adjustable Settings

If you have been using brushes before, then you will know that you can’t adjust anything. With paint sprayers, you can adjust almost everything. If you are working in tight spaces you can adjust the paint flow, you can also adjust the spray pattern and the speed settings.

This helps you a lot if you are working on different DIY projects at the same time.

Speed

Applying chalk paint with a brush isn’t recommended, the process is slow. It is recommended to use paint sprayers for chalk paint. These products are way faster than rollers, and the paint quality is better.

Finish Quality

You will get the best finish quality for chalk paint with a paint sprayer. These types of sprayers are optimized to deliver you the best quality they possibly can.
