What Are Detail Sanders?

The best way to explain how detail sanders are different from others is to consider a hard-to-reach spot—and know that’s where a detail sander can get the job done! These helpful tools get into the hard-to-reach spots other sanders just can’t reach or maneuver in. A key feature that helps these handy sanders work so well is their triangle-shaped head. Perfectly designed to get into tight corners without any problem.

Usually, these types of sanders come with smaller motors. As a result, some detail sanders are not as fast as other sanders and aren’t the right tool for some jobs (like removing thick layers of paint). But, they produce less vibration, making them a great choice for tidier tasks, like operating in corners, working with little pieces of wood, or sanding areas that require just moderate polishing or sanding.

What Is a Detail Sander Used for?

Unlike belt sanders or orbital sanders, detail sanders are best suited for removing surface materials and bringing forward a smooth, polished finish.

Although smaller in size and less powerful than other sanders, detail sanders are popular for stripping paint and doing one last round of sanding before applying a fresh coat of paint, or prior to wood refinishing work.

If you are looking for a detail sander that will help you complete your projects quickly and effectively, the BLACK+DECKER BDEMS600 is a good option.

Our favorite feature of this detail sander is its size—it is smaller and very lightweight. This helps the BLACK+DECKER detail sander be particularly easy to use and control. The 3-position grip adds to its comfortability and control, too. It’s also quite compact and doesn’t take up a lot of storage space.

The finger attachment on this sander is another attribute we like. It comes in handy when working with tight corners, and ensures easy control in delicate areas.

This sander comes with a 1.2-amp motor and delivers up to 14,000 OPM (orbits per minute)—making this a great sander for most detailing jobs.

On the downside: The dust collector works well, but if you’re working with a very rusty surface, you’ll need to clean the dust canister frequently. So, plan accordingly.

What We Like:

  • Lightweight: This sander is compact, easy to use, and small enough that you can store it just about anywhere.
  • 3-positions: The different handle positions are a bonus, and allow you to control the sander easily.
  • Finger attachment: Great for working in tight spaces, the finger attachments are helpful for more delicate jobs, too.
  • Speed: The 1.2-amp motor delivers 14,000 OPM.
What We Don’t Like:

  • Small dust canister -The tiny size means you’ll need to stop frequently to clean out the canister.

2. PORTER-CABLE PCCW201B – Best Corner Sander

Best Features  PORTER-CABLE 20V MAX* Sheet Sander, Tool Only (PCCW201B)

  • Cordless Detail Sander
  • Adjustable Speed
  • Rubberized Grip

More detailed review ↴

If you have to work outside or somewhere that doesn’t have electricity then you need a cordless detail sander.  There are great cordless models available, but the one I prefer the most is the PORTER-CABLE PCCW201B.

A big reason why I prefer cordless detail sanders is that you are not limited by the cord — if you are dealing with high areas then you can easily reach them. The only downside is that you have to recharge the battery a lot.

What I like most about this sander is the adjustable speed settings — you can adjust the speed from 9,000 to 12,000 to match it with the project you are working on. Most of the cordless sanders don’t have variable speed, but this one does.

Another great thing about this one is the dust collection system — it comes with a dust bag that you can attach whenever you want, and if you want a more efficient collection then you can also connect the sander with your vacuum.

On the downside, you have to buy the battery separately.

What We Like:

  • Cordless – You don’t need a power outlet nor be limited by a cord.
  • Adjustable Speed – You can adjust the speed from 9,000 to 14,000 OPM.
  • Comfortable  – Comes with a rubberized grip.
  • Dust Collector – It comes with a detachable dust bag.
What We Don’t Like:

  • The battery isn’t included.

3. BLACK+DECKER MS2000 – Best Sander For Small Areas

Best Features  BLACK+DECKER Random Orbit Sander with Smart Select (MS2000)

  • 4-in-1 use
  • Adjustable speed
  • Finger detail attachment

If you’re someone who often works on multiple projects requiring different tools, and have troubles finding the best sander to tackle all your projects—then you may want to check out the BLACK+DECKER MS2000. This machine is really 4 sanders in 1.

Great for home renovations, the BLACK+DECKER MS2000 is a solid, multi-purpose tool. Changing out the base converts it from a detail sander, to a finish sander, random orbit sander, or a 1/4 sheet sander. After you change the sander’s base, you need only click one button to lock the base in place; and then you’re ready to go!

This sander also comes with a smart select dial that allows you to adjust the sander speed. The detail sander version comes with a finger attachment that you can use to sand small corners or hard-to-reach areas.

This is a great tool for DIYers and homeowners who are working with different surfaces. On the downside, this sander isn’t recommended for large/heavy projects.

What We Like:

  • Multi-purpose sander – This is a versatile sander. We like that it can be transformed from a detail sander to a finish, random orbit, or 1/4 sheet sander with just a click of a button.
  • Adjustable speed – The smart select dial allows you to easily adjust the sander’s speed.
  • Finger attachment – This option is essential for sanding small and hard-to-reach corners.
What We Don’t Like:

  • Not recommended for heavy projects.

4. WEN 6301 – Best Mouse Sander

Best Features  WEN 6301 Electric Detailing Palm Sander

  • Powerful
  • High speed
  • Velcro base pad

More detailed review ↴

If you are looking for a compact detail sander, we recommend the WEN 6301. This sander is super lightweight but still powerful, making it perfect for DIYers and tackling small projects.

The WEN 6301 comes with a 1-amp motor that delivers up to 13,500 OPM. Although this sander doesn’t offer adjustable speed, it can still do a good job removing unwanted materials from your work surface.

The WEN 6301 has a Velcro base pad, allowing you to remove and replace sanding paper quickly and easily.

Another plus of this sander is its dust collection system. The WEN 6301 has a particularly effective system that minimizes sawdust mess. You can attach the dust system to a dust bag or vacuum cleaner, too.

On the downside, the dust bag isn’t included. You’ll have to buy it separately.

What We Like:

  • Small – Great for working in tight corners, and this model doesn’t require a lot of storage space.
  • Fast – Its 1-amp motor delivers up to 13,500 OPM.
  • Velcro base pad – You can easily remove and replace sandpaper
  • Effective dust collection system – We like how well this system cleans up (but be sure to see what we don’t like).
What We Didn’t Like:

  • The dust bag isn’t included, and must be purchased separately.

  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Robust motor
  • High-speed

More detailed review ↴

If you often work on home renovation projects, you need a good multi-use sander. An affordable and popular model is the Genesis GMT15A.

This multi-use, flexible tool can work as a detail sander, power scraper, plunge cut saw, and grout remover. It also comes with a powerful 2.5-amp motor.

The Genesis GMT15A has variable speed settings, allowing you to adjust the speed from 15,000-to 22,000 OPM. It’s durable and comes with a die-cast aluminum housing.

Weighing in at just 2.8 pounds, this is a lightweight (but powerful) option. We like the Genesis’ versatility. But, this model doesn’t come with a dust collector system, so you will have to deal with the dust.

What We Like:

  • Versatile tool – When you purchase this model, you’re getting not just a detail sander, but also a plunge cut saw, scraper, and more.
  • Powerful – It features a 2.5-amp motor.
  • Speed – The Genesis allows you to change the speed from 15,000 to 22,000 OPM.
  • Lightweight – It is small and portable.
What We Didn’t Like:

  • Unfortunately, this detail sander doesn’t come with a dust collection system.

6.TECCPO Detail Sander – Best Compact Electric Sander

More detailed review ↴

The TECCPO Detail Sander is a powerful and compact sander, perfect for multiple sanding applications. With a 14,000 OPM speed, the TAMS22P can quickly and easily remove material from just about any surface you’re working on. The TECCPO includes a 12-piece sandpaper set that provides a variety of grits to match your sanding needs, and the efficient dust collection system helps keep your work area clean.

A unique feature of the TECCPO detail sander is that it is reversible, so you can use it as a right- or left-handed tool. We also like the multi-function 1.1-amp motor, which can be used for other tasks, such as polishing and buffing.

This is a great tool for woodworking, furniture making, and other DIY projects.

What We Like:

  • Performance – The copper motor delivers outstanding operability.

  • Build quality is on the average side.
  • The sander’s design is a bit bulky.

Features to Look for When Shopping for Detail Sanders

A detail sander is a vital tool for both woodworking and carpentry experts and DIYers alike. For a smooth finish on any surface, these sanders are essential. As mentioned earlier, there are many detail sander models available in the market. But, it can be difficult to discern which models are a good buy—and which are poor quality.

One of the most used sanders are the mouse sanders. These type of sanders are made for corners and hard to reach areas. In our best triangle sanders, we included different models. Most of these machines are small and lightweight, so storing them won't be a problem.

To help you find a high-quality detail sander, be sure to refer back to our list above. But we know that a shopping guide isn’t enough to help you find the right product for your needs. You’ll need to consider key features, too, before deciding which product to buy. Here are six key features to consider.

  1. Orbit Speed

This is a critical factor to consider, when selecting a detail sander. Orbit speed will directly influence how quickly you can complete a project.

OPM, or orbits per minute, can help you identify which sanders have the greatest efficiency. You’ll also want to look for models that have an adjustable speed, so you can adjust accordingly based on your needs.

Detail sanders aren’t generally very fast. The normal rate is roughly 8,000 – 12,000 OPM. (This is because detail sanders are generally used for detail jobs only, so high speed isn’t required.)

  1. Motor Power

Just like speed, motor power is a key factor in quality sanders. Usually, the more power the sander, the faster it operates.

For detail sanders, you’ll want to select a sander with a mid-range motor— not too low or too powerful. If you choose a low motor, you won’t be able to complete your projects quickly; and with a too-powerful motor, you can’t work with more delicate projects.

Powerful motors are needed when you need to quickly remove paint. For this time of job, a sander that comes with a 0.8 to 1.5-amp motor is recommended.

Detail sanders can be powered by a corded or cordless power supply. Cordless detail sanders are ideal for minor work and those hard-to-reach locations (and helpful when you don’t have access to electricity supply).

  1. Weight

Usually, detail sanders are used to give a final buff and polish to surfaces. This type of sander has to be precise and easy to carry around. Which is why you’ll want to find a detail sander that’s lightweight.

Small, lightweight detail sanders are ideal for working in tight corners and hard-to-reach areas. Plus, when working with delicate projects, finding a lightweight sander will be easier for you to grip and control.

Heavy detail sanders are not recommended.

  1. Price

Price plays a huge role when buying any tool. And, when it comes to detail sanders, you’ve got a lot of options—in a lot of different price ranges.

If you are planning to do a lot of projects, it may be wise to look at higher quality, expensive sanders. The old adage of getting what you pay for holds true here: More expensive sanders tend to come with more features, higher-quality materials, and may last longer, too.

But, if you’re planning on using the sander only for a small project—you may want to go for a cheaper option. Buying a detail sander that has an average price — not too cheap or too costly—is a good move.

  1. Durability and Added Accessories

If you spend a lot of money on a tool, then you want it to last, right? Absolutely! That’s why we recommend shopping for a highly durable detail sander.

Higher-quality sanders, made of aluminum or metal, tend to last longer than lower-quality products. When shopping for a sander, avoid models made with a plastic case or body.

You’ll want to look into the manufacturer’s warranty, when weighing the durability of a potential purchase, too.

And, don’t forget to consider a product’s accessories: Different models come with various accessories — some come with extra sandpaper, some come with cases, and more. A detail sander that fulfills your needs and comes with many accessories is a sure-fire win.

  1. Dust Collection System

Dust is something you need to consider with any sander. The best options have systems in place to help you manage the mess—and help keep the tool running efficiently and effectively. The finer the dust collection system, the smoother your sanded surface will be, too.

Final Words

We hope this guide can help you make an informed and effective purchase. The products and features recommended here should give you everything you need to know about detail sanders.

All of the models listed within this article are high-quality and will get your job done well. We’ve made sure to list sanders available in different price ranges and offering a variety of features.

But, if you’re still not sure what sander is right for you, we recommend the #1 best sander listed above. It’s good for DIY projects and professional use, plus its modest price should fit just about any budget.
