What’s the Working Principle of Sandblasting Guns, and Why Do You Need an Air compressor?

Sandblasting is used to clean or prepare a surface by forcibly propelling abrasive materials such as sand, glass beads, or steel grit against it using high-pressure air. The abrasive material is propelled out of a nozzle at high speed, striking the surface and removing contaminants or creating a roughened surface for coating or painting.

An air compressor is essential in the sandblasting process because it provides the high-pressure air necessary to propel the abrasive material out of the nozzle. The air compressor compresses ambient air, increasing its pressure and forcing it through a hose to the sandblasting nozzle. The nozzle has a venturi effect that draws the abrasive material into the air stream and propels it out at high speed.

The air pressure and volume required for sandblasting depend on the abrasive material and the treated surface. Some materials require higher pressure and more air volume to be effective.

For efficient and effective sandblasting, a high-quality air compressor with a large tank and a high CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating.

Can I do Sandblasting Myself?

Yes, you can do blasting by yourself. However, if you want to do sandblasting by yourself, you must choose an air compressor according to your working needs. You can follow these tips to do sandblasting by yourself:

  • Make sure to use some safety equipment first. The sand can go into your eyes, nose, ears, face, and skin, damaging your health. Use a proper mask to cover yourself.
  • You also need a blast pot, hoses, and nozzles with the air compressor.
  • According to your requirements, decide the size of the compressor tank
  • There is a blasting media you can purchase: sand and soda. To select the amount of media, you need to consider some factors. They are HP, nozzles, media size, project size, and speed.

Types of Sandblasters

Sandblasters work similarly: ground silica sand and glass beads clean surfaces. It would be metal, rust or paint, or any other material. There are two types of sandblasters, and those are:

Pressure blasters

These blasters have much energy that even small compressors can use. There is a large canister that has silica under high pressure. A port built to withstand the effects of sand connects the sandblasting gun to a hose at the bottom of the canister.

Upon pulling the trigger, air and sand shoot out of a single source. Blasting takes place in open areas, so it is not possible to collect and reuse the sand.

Siphon Cabinets

This method is standard in handyman’s possessions. It has three parts, two hoses, one connected to the bottom of the handle and one to the barrel. To operate it, you need a larger air compressor.

In the cabinet, there are loose grains of sand. Each grain of sand resembles a funnel. One hose connects to the compressor, and the other to the barrel. It is a relatively affordable method.

10 Best Air Compressors for Sandblasting (In-Depth Review)

So, for an in-depth review, we had six air compressors already in our workshop for regular daily operations. We had to arrange four large air compressors from our colleagues running automotive shops and using those air compressors for industrial purposes.

We tested these air compressors on three blasting guns:

Sandblasting Guns

CFM

YWHWLX Sandblasting gun

90 PSI

7 CFM

Aeropro Sand blasting gun

45-115 PSI

9-10.6 CFM

LE LEMATEC Sandblaster Gun Kit

7-12 CFM

So, if you’re using sandblasting guns within these PSI and CFM ranges, you can confidently rely on these air compressors.

1. CRAFTSMAN Air Compressors

DEWALT Pancake Air Compressor, 6 Gallon, 165 PSI (DWFP55126)

  • 165 max PSI
  • 6.0-gallon tank (22.7 L) and
  • 2.6 SCFM delivered @ 90 PSI pump

More detailed review ↴

This 6-gallon air compressor by CRAFTSMAN is at the top of our list, and we have our reasons. So we got a piece of an already painted metallic object and tried to remove the paint with our sandblasting guns.

Firstly you need to know that the blaster specification is the first factor to be considered when choosing any compressor.  This compressor’s maximum pressure is 150, so we could use them easily with our sandblasting guns.

The compressor is a portable and oil-free unit, so you do not have to worry about the maintenance of portability from this 6-Gallon compressor. It has enough tank capacity to work with sandblasters ranging from 90 PSI-150 PSI to 7CFM-12CFM.

This compressor has a 0.2 HP running motor with 2.6 SCFM, which can deliver 90 PSI and 3.5 at 40 PSI which was more than enough for our YWHWLX gun. However, because of the small tank, it is not for heavy sandblasting work but for small or medium work.

Additionally, we felt issues while testing the sound coming from this 32-pound compressor because it delivers 78 decibels of sound rating, which is loud for this small air compressor

Additional Accessories: It has a drain valve (easy to drain the tank), two couplers, and rubber feet (reduces vibration).

What We Liked?
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Oil-free – No maintenance
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Noisy

2. BOSTITCH Pancake Air Compressor

CRAFTSMAN Air Compressor, 6 Gallon, Pancake, Oil-Free with 13 Piece Accessory Kit (CMEC6150K)

  • PORTABLE: 6-gallon capacity
  • NO MAINTENANCE: Durable, oil-free pump
  • PRESSURE: 150 Max PSI

More detailed review ↴

Bostitch is another 6-gallon compressor with almost the same features as a previous compressor. This oil-free, maintenance-free compressor is also portable and won’t be a headache to carry around.

This is also a 150 maximum PSI working compressor which made our testing easier as we already knew it would handle all three blasting guns of our testing team.

This compressor delivers 2.6 SCFM at 90 PSI which provides quick recovery time.

This compressor is also loud because of its 78.5 decibels of sound level. However, the weight of the compressor is less than the previous one, which means it is more portable and handy.

Additionally, this compressor comes with high flow regulators and couplers, which helps maximize the compressor’s performance, while the two universal couplers allow easy connecting of two users.

Sandblasting becomes easier with a good working compressor; this 6-Gallon compressor was quite handy. It did not cause many issues when we did sandblast using all three sandblasting guns, but as we had to buy our pump and hose separately, it became a little more expensive than other compressors.

What We Liked?
  • Light-weight and portable
  • Couplers allow two users to use this air compressor
  • Oil-free – No Maintenance required
What We Didn’t Like?
  • No hose in the box
  • The pump needs to be purchased separately

3. PORTER-CABLE Air Compressor

Bostitch BTFP02012 6 Gallon Pancake Compressor

  • 150 max PSI
  • 6.0-gallon tank (22.7 L)
  • 29 lb. weight makes the unit easy to carry and store

More detailed review ↴

This is another pancake air compressor with almost the same features as the other two. Our testing team tested it with the blasting gun to ensure it can handle sandblasting projects.

To be precise, this is another 150 PSI compressor with the same SCFM of 2.6 at 90 PSI working capability, allowing the tank to be filled more quickly without wasting much time.

But our testing team felt this compressor to be more stabilized and easy to carry. It is almost the size of 30 pounds, and with rubber feet and drain valves, you can easily maintain it. (sandblasting becomes easier).

It is an oil-free compressor that does not need much maintenance. The compressor draws low amps with its 120V motor, which can be used even in cold weather.

Additional accessories In the box: This compressor has a shroud, handle, and console cover, which protects the unit and its parts from any damage. It comes with high-flow regulators and couplers too.

What We Liked?
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Protection from any damage
  • Oil-free – No Maintenance required
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Not Ideal for heavy work

4. DEWALT Pancake Air Compressor

PORTER-CABLE Air Compressor, 6-Gallon, Pancake, Oil-Free (C2002)

  • 150 psi max tank pressure
  • 2.6 SCFM @ 90 psi
  • 6 gal Pancake style tank

More detailed review ↴

This is another pancake compressor that can be an ideal choice for sandblasting, as we didn’t face any difficulty throughout the testing procedure. Everything went smoothly.

This compressor is a 6-Gallon tank capacity compressor that can deliver 2.6 SCFM at 90 PSI pump. This 22.7 L tank capacity compressor is quite satisfying because of its high PSI; it even decreased the recovery time.

This highly efficient motor working compressor allows the compressor to work in cold weather or with large extensions, allowing us to easily reach our object without needing to take the compressor.

The thing which was not pleasing for us while testing was its noise because of its 75.5 decibels of sound level. Additionally, the high-flow regulators made it easier to read the pressure, while the couplers allowed two users to work simultaneously.

As far as sandblasting is concerned, this compressor comes with 165 PSI maximum, allowing our testing team to easily connect all three guns (one by one) without any issue.

Being an oil-free compressor already makes it maintain-free, and its weight is also only 30 lbs which is great as it becomes easier to carry it around. Additionally, the compressor has 2 universal couplers, a drain valve (to drain the air compressor after use), and a console cover, providing protection.

What We Liked?
  • Oil-Free
  • Light-weight
  • Durable construction – Protects the air compressor from accidents
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Noisy
  • Needs breaks after some time of use as it gets hot

Makita MAC2400 2.5 HP* Big Bore™ Air Compressor

  • 4-Pole motor produces 4.2 CFM at 90
  • Oil lubricated: Cooler running pump minimizes wear
  • Increased Air Intake

More detailed review ↴

Makita MAC2400 is a big bore cylinder air compressor that is considered quite a powerful and amazing compressor because of its amazing features and capabilities. Although its gallon size is comparatively less, the CFM and PSI are great (which are mainly the crucial parameters for sandblasting)

This compressor made our work easier and faster because of its faster recovery time. We did not have to wait for a long time during testing too. This powerful compressor has a 2.5 HP 4-Pole working motor which is amazing in its working.

Although this air compressor is louder than some others at around 80 decibels, this is typical for oil-lubricated compressors and is not considered excessive. This model may suit your needs if you are comfortable with some noise. However, we found the continuous use of this compressor to be irritating, so we had to turn it off while testing.

This 130 PSI max compressor was capable of handling heavy work. It did a good job during our testing, but we’d not recommend that professionals sandblast large painted objects.

Additionally, the compressor has a roll-cage construction which adds to its protection and allows it to bear extreme working. The compressor comes with automotive air filters, which help increase the air intake and efficiency of the compressor.

Lastly, we loved the low amps draw of only 1730 RPM from this compressor, which reduces chances of breakage or breakers to trip, while the copper finned discharge tube is ideal for heat dissipation which will be a must from sanding.

What We Liked?
  • Low noise
  • Durable Construction
  • Compact and Portable
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Require Maintenance – Oil-lubricated
  • Heavy-weight

6. Makita MAC5200 3.0 HP Big Bore Air Compressor

More detailed review ↴

This one is another Makita air compressor that comes with amazing features. We didn’t have this air compressor in our workshop, so we interviewed some users and professionals to know their opinions.

This is also a cast iron pump with a big bore cylinder and piston-made compressor, which is the reason behind the fast recovery and performance.

You can understand from the features of this compressor that it is quite good to be used for sandblasting guns.

This is a 3 HP powerful motor that is capable of delivering about 6.5 CFM a 90 PSI. A compressor is a low-maintenance unit but needs maintenance as it is an oil-lubricated compressor; however, the amount of noise it produces is quite surprising (65 decibels), and according to users, it can be considered almost no noise.

They could use the compressor easily without much trouble with their sandblasting guns, and being a 5.2 Gallon compressor, it also has a good amount of space. While the high PSI of this compressor almost covers our two guns to be easily used with the compressor.

Additionally, this 75 pounds weight compressor comes with foldable handles and wheels for easy transportation, and the best thing is that it comes with a hose length of 3/8- inch.

What We Liked?
  • Easy to move because of handles and wheels

More detailed review ↴

Quincy QT-54 is an extremely large-capacity compressor that is mostly recommended for professional use as they need to use it continuously or most often. We went to one of our fellow auto shop owners, as we don’t have this air compressor. At our request, he used our sandblasting guns.

This 5 HP powerful motor works on 230V and comes with 60 Gallon tank size. This compressor is an amazing choice for many users who need to do sandblasting.

This fast-working compressor works faster and more often than many other compressors. During testing, our member observed this compressor to be quite smooth working.

This is a low-running RPM and low HP compressor but has 175 max pressure, which is a lot, and it also increases the CFM of the compressor up to 15.4 at 90 PSI. However, the best thing is that it produces little noise.

Although this much larger compressor of 475 pounds should be extremely loud, it is not. Additionally, its pump life is about 30,000. Our all-tree sandblasting guns were easily used on this compressor without the need for any second. However, you should consider that you need it professionally, as it is not for household purposes.

What We Liked?
  • Great for large-scale sandblasting projects
  • Life expectancy is great
  • High performance
  • Less noisy
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Heavy-weight
  • Oil-lubricated – Needs maintenance

8. Ingersoll-Rand SS3J5.5GH-WB

Ingersoll-Rand SS3J5.5GH-WB 5.5 Horsepower 8 Gallon Oiled Gas Twin Pontoon Compressor

  • Portable Design & Lightweight
  • Twin 8-gallon tanks
  • Gas-Powered
  • Max Pressure: 135 PSI

More detailed review ↴

The Ingersoll-Rand air compressor is best for medium-scale sandblasting projects.

It’s best for remote areas, where you don’t have an electricity supply, as it’s gas-powered. It’s usable on the roughest terrain too.

This powerful compressor has 135 maximum PSI and a 5.5 HP motor. Even though the PSI is less than other air compressors on our list, it is still great because the CFM and HP make it great.

This compressor has a specialty; it comes with 8-Gallon twin tanks with two couplers that allow you to use multiple guns or tools if needed.

We loved the durable cast iron construction that makes the compressor long-lasting and usable for over 5000 hours.

If we talk about the noise level, according to the manufacturer’s specifications, the sound level of the SS3J5.5GH-WB compressor is approximately 80 decibels at a distance of three feet. This is about the same noise level as a lawnmower or a busy street, and it can be quite noticeable in quiet environments.

This compressor brand is quite reliable, and our team approves it, but it has much weight (of 175 pounds), not at least a portable compressor weight.

While performing sandblasting with this compressor, we were able to finish our work fastly as this compressor’s CFM is 11.8, which is quite high and allows continuous working.

What We Liked?
  • High CFM allows continuous working and fast recovery
  • Up to 5000 hours of life
  • Portable design – but due to it’s heavy-weight, it’s not that portable
  • Durable construction
What We Didn’t Like?Cons
  • Extremely heavy
  • Loud air compressor

9. DEWALT DXCMV5048055

Dewalt DXCMV5048055 5 HP 80 Gallon TOPS Two Stage Oil-Lube Industrial Stationary Air Compressor

  • Air Delivery SCFM @ 175PSI (CFM): 17
  • Air Delivery SCFM @ 100PSI (CFM): 17.9
  • 80-gallon tank

More detailed review ↴

This is another Dewalt air compressor which is not like the other but is mostly used for professional purposes. This extremely heavy compressor is 470 pounds, which is not for households.

Mostly it is preferable for workshops or furniture houses while removing paints is necessary. Our friend currently using this 80 Gallon compressor in its workshop seems satisfied with its performance.

This compressor won’t be portable, or you won’t be able to carry them around, but they are stationary compressors and need to be placed at a fixed location. For this compressor, you need extension cords, nozzles, and long hoses to ensure it reaches the gun and the gun reaches the desired place.

Important features: It has a 5HP top motor with a long life and continues working through its 230V. This 2-stage air compressor has a high PSI of 175, which can deliver 17 CFM and only 55 decibels of sound level.

Also, the compressor allows it to run off multiple tools, which can also work on 17.9 CFM at 100 PSI.

Additionally, the compressor has a control panel and pressure gauge with 2 quick connections. As this is a heavy compressor, it must be protected from any voltage fluctuation, which is done by the thermal overload protection system feature.

The nozzle of this compressor needs to be 3/4- inch; it is an oil-lubricated compressor, but it will be the ideal choice for sandblasting.

What We Liked?
  • Thermal overload protection – Protects the motor from overheating
  • Heavy-duty air compressor
  • Large capacity – 80-gallon tank
  • Less noisy as compared to other air compressors of this caliber
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Heavy and needs to be stationary/ not portable

10. Powermate Vx PLA4708065

Powermate Vx PLA4708065 80-Gallon Electric Air Compressor

  • Offers a 155-PSI Maximum Pressure
  • Provides 14-CFM at 90-PSI
  • Features a 80-Gallon Capacity Tank

More detailed review ↴

Powermate is also a heavy-duty air compressor, as we discussed above. As these compressors are not easily available, we managed to interview an auto paint shop owner who has used this air compressor for years.

According to him: this powerful compressor has a 4.7 HP running motor that works on 15 amps and 240v outlet (we’re talking about Uk and Europe regions here)

With a maximum pressure capacity of 155 PSI, the compressor can deliver up to 14 CFM at 90 PSI which can easily be used with sandblasting guns.

This 80-Gallon compressor has much capacity and can be used continuously for enough time to fastly complete your task of removing paint.

It has a cast iron crankcase and a full cast iron cylinder body (durable construction).

It is recommended that users wear ear protection when operating the Powermate Vx PLA4708065 to protect against potential hearing damage. (Sound level = 83 decibels with our decibel meter)

What We Liked?
  • Heavy-duty working compressor and high PSI
  • Powerful motor and high CFM
What We Didn’t Like?
  • Extremely loud and needs manual help

What are the Parameters You Should Consider while Getting an Air Compressor for Sandblasting?

PSI (Air Pressure)

A PSI is a pressure per square inch, and the dependency is the same as for CFM, depending on your needs. The PSI and CFM make the unit work. But remember, the air compressor’s rating should be more than the level of the tools.

We recommend choosing more than 120 to 150-160 PSI compressors.

CFM (Cubic feet per minute)

CFM works for the compressor to provide it with pressure. It tells how much power an air compressor gives. The more the compressor has the CFM rating, it means it offers or produces more air. The higher CFM makes the compressor eligible for heavy-duty work.

Although it depends on your work, we recommend choosing an air compressor with a max of 3-7 CFM

Nozzle size

Under the nozzle, it is defined where the direction of the airflow will be. It covers the pressure into flow by controlling the direction of the airflow. It is the amplifier for point application. The nozzle controls rates, speed, mass, flow, shapes, or pressure.

Tank size

The size of the tank is the most significant factor to be considered. It depends on how much work you want to do with the compressor.

If your workload is continuous, you need to select the larger tanks. Larger size tanks can hold much-compressed air or air volume.

You can apply any tank size unless you run your compressor for hours. We would recommend choosing more than three or between 5-8-gallon size tanks.

Hose length

The length of the hose matters the most, as it helps reach far places easily.  You need a long hose to use your air compressor with sandblasting guns. Consider buying a 20-25 feet or long hose to ensure it reaches your objects easily.

Is it Portable or not?

Choosing portable or not completely depends on your working criteria. If you are using a compressor with a gun for heavy-duty projects, then you need a compressor with large capacity, PSI, and CFM that mostly does not come in small sizes and is less weight.

So make sure to choose a portable ( lightweight with medium features), not portable ( heavy and large capacity and features) compressor according to your needs of working.

Additional accessories and connectors

Nozzles, hoses (to connect the compressor and gun), couplers, and filters ( to increase the air intake), with lubricants ( if your compressor is not oil-free). All these accessories work as connectors or for other purposes while using sandblasting guns to ensure the compressor works fine.

Conclusion

When choosing the best air compressor for sandblasting, you can always count on brands such as DeWalt, Ingersoll, Quincy, PowerMate, Porter, Makita, Craftsman, and Bostitch.

We have provided a comprehensive air compressor review that can assist you in choosing the best compressor for your sandblasting jobs.

To summarize, there are some essential parameters that you need to consider before choosing an air compressor for your blast cabinet: PSI, CFM, RPM, the nozzle, and the size of the tank.

FAQs

What is the best air compressor for sandblasting?

The best air compressor for sandblasting will depend on the sandblasting work and the abrasive materials being used. Generally, a compressor with a large tank, high CFM rating, and high PSI rating is recommended for sandblasting.

What is the minimum CFM required for sandblasting?

The minimum CFM required for sandblasting depends on the nozzle size and the abrasive material used. Generally, a CFM rating of at least 10 is recommended for small sandblasting projects, while larger projects may require a CFM rating of 50 or more.

What Size Air Compressor for Sandblasting?

Your air compressor’s size for sandblasting depends upon three factors: Nozzle size, the CFM volume, and PSI.

More complex projects requiring a #2 nozzles 2/4 take 80 to 120 CFM.  Heavy-duty operations that use #-6 nozzles or larger require 175 to 140 CFM and higher at 90 PSI. Sandblasting requires a continuous flow of air. Therefore, tank capacity is also essential.
