What Is a Latex Paint Sprayer?

You might think that there are only three different sprayer types and that’s all, but that’s not the case. You see, different sprayers can spray different paints.

We often forget that paints are made from different chemicals, and some sprayers don’t have enough power to deal with those chemicals. Latex, Water-Based, and Oil-Based paints are totally different from each other.

The same sprayer deals with these types of paint differently. While a spray gun can handle latex paint, the same spray gun can get clogged when using oil-based paint, and vice versa.

So, a latex paint sprayer is the type of sprayer that can handle latex paint without having to thin it. Usually, latex sprayers have a lot of power and pressure, and that allows them to spray un-thinned paint.

Best Latex Paint Sprayers

1. Graco Magnum 262805 X7 Cart – Best Paint Sprayer For Latex Paint

Best Features

  • Pistol Pump
  • Powerful
  • Adjustable

More detailed review ↴

If we are talking about the best latex paint sprayer then we need one that ticks all the boxes. And, the one that does is the Graco Magnum 262805.

What I like most about this sprayer is that it’s fully adjustable. You can adjust the pressure and the material flow size, this allows you to use this same sprayer for projects of any size.

When it comes to latex paint – this airless paint sprayer comes with a steel piston pump, the pump gives the tool enough power to spray unthinned paint at a very high-pressure rate – including latex paint.

When you compare this to the other sprayers listed here, then this one is the most powerful one– it features a 5/8 HP motor that can deliver 3000 PSI. The sprayer is fast too, but not as fast as the manufacturer says.

Most people say that it can spray up to 0.31 gallons per minute. But, that’s not true at all. From our tests, it sprays less than that.

On the downside, due to its motor and other heavy parts, this latex sprayer is part of the bulky tools. It weighs 23 lbs, but luckily the cart has a handle and two wheels so moving it won’t be a problem.

What We Liked:

  • Stainless Steel Pistol – Gives the tool enough power to deal with latex paint.
  • Powerful – Features a 5/8 HP motor that delivers up to 3000 PSI
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the speed and pressure.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Heavy – Weights 23 pounds.

2. Graco Magnum X5 – Best Latex Spray Guns

Best Features

  • 75 ft paint hose support system
  • Fast
  • Up to 125 gallons per year.

The next paint sprayer on our list is another Graco sprayer. Graco is a very known brand for airless paint sprayers. If you put the first sprayer and this one head to head, then we can say that this one is a “smaller version” of our first pick. But, when it comes to latex paint they deliver the same result.

It features a powerful 1/2 HP motor that can deliver up to 3000 PSI. The speed is good too, from our tests it can spray up to 0.25-0.27 gallons per minute.

Just like our first pick, this one comes with a piston pump. The piston pump is known to give the Graco sprayers enough power to deal with any kind of paint– including Latex paint. You can also adjust the pressure and material flow to match the project you are working on.

I mostly use this sprayer when I have outdoor painting projects. The reason behind that is because it comes with a 75 ft. paint hose (as you can see in the picture), and that allows me to move freely. Sometimes, I trip on the hose, so careful with that too.

On the downside, this sprayer weighs approximately 13 lbs. and it doesn’t come with wheels, it isn’t very portable. The only thing that makes this tool somewhat portable is the handle.

What We Liked:

  • Powerful – 1/2 HP motor that delivers 3000 PSI.
  • Fast – It can spray up to 0.27 gallons per minute.
  • Adjustable – You can change the pressure and material flow.
  • Paint Hose – Comes with a 75ft paint hose support system.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Weight – Weighs 13 lbs and it doesn’t have wheels

3.REXBETI Ultimate-750 – Best Spray Guns For Latex Paint

Best Features  REXBETI Ultimate-750 Paint Sprayer, High Power HVLP Home Electric Spray Gun, Lightweight, Easy...

  • 3 Spray Nozzles
  • 3 Spray Patterns
  • Lightweights

More detailed review ↴

One of my favorite paint sprayers is REXBETI 750, mainly because it’s very easy to use it. You just fill the paint, put your hand on the comfortable grip and start spraying – easy as that.

This HVLP sprayer isn’t as big as our two first picks, but it has enough power to spray latex paint. It comes with 500 W of power that will provide you a smooth and clean finish.

The sprayer is very versatile, mainly because it has adjustable settings – you can adjust the paint output. Also, spraying nozzles help a lot with this.

You will get three different spraying nozzles – the 2.0 mm nozzle and the 2.5 mm nozzle should be used for thin paints such as varnish paint, and the 3.0 mm nozzle is made for un-thinned paint such as latex products.

What I like most about this paint sprayer is that it’s very easy to clean. It comes with cleaning equipment that helps a lot to faster up the process.

On the downside, the sprayer has a 6.6 ft. power cord, which is good enough, but it’s very short if you compare it to our two first picks.

What We Liked:

  • Power – It comes with 500W of power.
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the paint flow.
  • 3 Nozzles – 2,0mm, 2.5mm, 3,0mm.
  • Easy to clean – It comes with cleaning equipment

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Short cord – The cord is only 6,6ft which can be short if you are working outdoors.

4. Wagner 0518080

Best Features  Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP Paint or Stain Sprayer, Complete Adjustability for...

  • HVLP
  • Two-Stage Motor
  • 20ft Hose

More detailed review ↴

Although Wagner 0518080 isn’t as powerful as our other airless paint sprayers, it still is very good when it comes to latex paint.

You should thank the two-stage motor that this tool has for that. Keep in mind that this is an HVLP paint sprayer, so you can expect the tool to over-spray the surface a bit.

But, HVLP’s have an advantage when it comes to pressure, you don’t need a lot of pressure to spray un-thinned material. And, from experience, that gives you a very smooth finish if you are using latex paint.

Plus it has adjustable settings where you can adjust the paint flow, this can help with the overspray problem, but you won’t cut the problem entirely.

I mostly use this one for small outdoor projects, it has a 20ft. paint hose that allows me to move freely without having to pick up the sprayer.

On the downside, I don’t like the cleaning process. The paint cup doesn’t have enough room to fit my hand, so I have to use a brush. That makes the cleaning process a little harder.

What We Liked:

  • HVLP – Because of the HVLP system, this sprayer doesn’t need a lot of pressure to spray un-thinned paint.
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the paint flow.
  • Powerful – Two-stage motor that can spray un-thinned paint, including latex.
  • Hose – Comes with a 20 ft. paint hose.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Over-spray: You can expect to over-spray objects with this one.
  • Cleaning Process: The cleaning process is harder.

5. HomeRight C800971

Best Features  HomeRight C800971.A Super Finish Max, Includes 3 Brass Spray Tips, 3 Spray Patterns, Easy to Clean...

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to Clean.

More detailed review ↴

Not everyone who is looking for a latex paint sprayer is experienced. If you are a beginner then it’s recommended to start with a sprayer that is easy to use – and the one I recommend for this is the HomeRight Finish Max sprayer.

Obviously, this sprayer has all the things you need to start. It is specially made for homeowners and DIYers so you can expect to find it very easy to set up.

Although not as powerful as the other sprayers listed here, it still can spray latex paint, mainly because of its 450 W power motor.

It is adjustable too, you can adjust the material flow and you can also adjust the air cap to change the spray pattern – horizontal, vertical, and round.

What I like most about this sprayer is that it’s very easy to clean – it comes with a cleaning brush that helps a lot.

On the downside, you need to thin the paint by yourself because the sprayer isn’t able to spray un-thinned paint. But, it comes with a viscosity paint cup where you can measure paint thickness.

What We Liked:

  • Easy to use – Made especially for homeowners and DIYers.
  • Power – It has 450 W of power.
  • Adjustable – You can change the paint flow and the spray patterns.
  • Easy to clean – It comes with a cleaning brush.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • You need to thin the latex paint before using it.

Best Latex Spray Guns – Buyers Guide

As you can see there are many different latex sprayers on the market, so choosing one can be hard. That’s why we have decided to make this buying guide where we will list all the things you to focus on when buying a latex paint sprayer.

There are a lot of spray guns available, but latex spray guns are hard to find. Even if you find one, the chances of being low quality are high. That's why we have made a list of the best latex spray guns.

There are many different features that paint sprayers can have, but we have decided to list some of the most important ones. Here they are –

Adjustable Settings

You can spray almost everything with latex paint. So you want to be able to change the speed and the material flow.

You need to be able to change the settings to match it with the project you are working on. The adjustable settings are necessary for HVLP paint sprayers because it helps to minimize the over-spray.

Also, this feature helps you to work with different spraying projects no matter how big or small the project is. All of the sprayers we have listed here come with adjustable settings.

Paint Hose

As you can see most of the sprayers we have listed have a long paint hose. Why? Because the paint hose is very helpful, especially if you are working outdoor.

Most of the professional sprayers are heavy due to its motor so moving around the whole sprayer isn’t an option.

The paint hose makes it possible for you to spray objects at different places without having to move the whole sprayer. The longer the paint hose the better. Also, they are very helpful if you have to spray your house.

Having a paint hose also means that you are able to connect the garden hose which helps you to clean the whole sprayer faster and better.

Size

The size of the paint sprayer is very important. If you have to work outdoors then having a portable or handheld paint sprayer is better because it can help you to move around easier and usually they are lighter.

Having a heavy paint sprayer isn’t bad, just make sure that they have wheels to move around or a paint hose. If you want to get a powerful paint sprayer then expect the sprayer to be heavy.

Capacity

The perfect capacity depends on your project type. Having a large capacity means that you don’t have to refill it very often and therefore you will be able to work longer without stopping. But, it also means that the sprayer will be heavier.

Having a sprayer with a small capacity means that you need to refill it often and it can be overwhelming. Therefore, the choice is yours.

Spray Pattern

While painting you will deal with different objects. Those objects come in different sizes and shapes. So being able to change the spray pattern with one click can help you save a lot of time.

Most of the paint sprayers come with three different spray patterns – horizontal, vertical, and round.

Just imagine how helpful this feature can be if you are spraying a round table and then move to a wooden chair. Learn Here— How to Paint Spray Furniture?

What Is The Best Type of Sprayer for Latex Paint?

There are a lot of different types of latex paint sprayers. But, only 2 are worth mentioning:

Airless Paint Sprayers

Airless paint sprayers are the best when it comes to latex paint. Most of the airless paint sprayers have a piston pump that gives the tool enough pressure and power to deal with latex paint without having to thin it.

These types of sprayers cost more, but they offer an incredible finish and a lot of features that most sprayers don’t.

HVLP Sprayers

These types of sprayers aren’t recommended for latex paint. The HVLP system usually uses less pressure and that makes it harder to spray un-thinned paint. Most of the time you have to thin the latex paint. But, they cost less than airless sprayers and do a great job for smaller projects.

Frequently Asked Questions About Latex Paint Sprayers

Can You Spray Latex Paint With an HVLP Sprayer?

Yes, you can, but you might need to thin the paint beforehand. The HVLP sprayers use low pressure and that makes it difficult to spray un-thinned paint such as latex.

What Kind of Sprayer Do You Use for Latex Paint?

We recommend using airless paint sprayers for latex paint. These types of sprayers use high pressure and can deal with un-thinned paint the best.

What Size Tip Do You Need to Spray Latex Paint?

If it’s normal latex paint then we recommend using .015 – .019 tips. If it’s heavy latex paint then we recommend using .021 – .025 tips.

Final Words

In my research of the best latex paint sprayers, I have found out that airless paint sprayers are the best, and that’s why the two first units listed here are airless.

HVLP sprayers are not behind, actually, they can deal with latex paint just as good as the others but they tend to overspray a lot.

That being said, no matter which one sprayer you decide to buy from this list you still will end with a good unit that can spray latex paint.

If you are not sure which one to get, then make sure to read the buyer’s guide where we have listed all the features a latex painter needs to have.
